Advice

Our advice.

Starting your locs

Patience helps when growing locs: they don't form overnight. Sections take 4 to 6 months on average to take on a locced texture, and locs get more beautiful with the years.

In the first months, avoid wetting your hair too much or using too much grease: it prevents the locs from budding.

Before you start

Be motivated

In the first months there will be moments of doubt: budding takes time and those around you don't always understand. If it's your decision, hold on.

The first 6 months

Choosing your starting method

Three starting techniques

Instant (crochet interlocking): locs right away, looking like they've been worn for 8 months. Latching: an already locced look while keeping your length. Twist: hair coiled into tubes.

At the salon

The right length

From about 5 cm of hair, starting locs is possible. Relaxed hair can keep its length, but budding will take longer.

5 cm minimum

Size and parting pattern

Thin, medium or thick

The choice depends on your wishes, your face shape and your hair thickness. Locs gain a few millimeters as they form.

The parting pattern

Triangle, rounded, diamond, square or rectangle: choose the one that suits you, Amazing Locks will guide you.

The first weeks

Frizz

It can be annoying, but it's thanks to it that the loc takes shape. If it stays, it can be tucked in with a crochet hook or trimmed.

Normal

Good to know

Not too much oil

At the start, the goal is to tangle and bud the hair: avoid oils and moisturizers that are too rich.

The first months

From the root?

Budding starts a few centimeters from the root: with every shampoo, you quickly see the new growth that isn't locced yet.

Starting your locs 8

Which locs start should I choose?
The salon offers three techniques: the instant start (crochet and interlocking), for locs right away, as if worn for 8 months; latching, for an already-locked look while keeping your length; and twists, hair coiled into tubes. After a few years, the result is the same.
Is my hair long enough?
From about 5 cm (2 in) in length, starting locs is possible.
My hair is relaxed: can I start locs?
Yes. You can keep the length of relaxed hair, but the locking will take longer to form.
My hair is fine: can I start my locs?
It depends on how fine it is: the key is to choose the right thickness, the one that will give the best result. The salon will advise you.
What thickness should I choose?
Thin, medium or thick: according to your preferences, face shape and hair density. Locs gain a few millimetres in thickness as they form.
Which parting pattern should I choose for the start?
Triangle, rounded, diamond, square or rectangle: choose the one that suits you, and Amazing Locks will guide you.
How long does it take for my locs to form?
Generally allow 12 to 18 months for well-formed locs, sometimes longer. The time depends on the texture and length of your hair, and on maintenance. Two locs on the same head can also progress at different rates. During this period, they go through several stages: they first swell and frizz, then become irregular, before firming up. We cannot give you an exact time in advance: it depends on your hair.
Can I have locs right away?
It depends on the technique. With twist or latching, your locs are started at the appointment, then form over several months. With the instant start (crochet piquage), the result looks like locs formed for about 8 months, right at the end of the appointment. They are not mature locs yet: they require the same maintenance. To gain length, the salon can also fit custom-made extensions: allow a few weeks for making them, and contact us by phone before booking.

Prices 1

How much do locs cost?
The price depends on the technique and the length of your hair. Twist start: 120 € (short hair), 160 € (medium-length), 180 € (long). Latching start: 160 €, 180 € and 200 €. Instant start (crochet piquage): 350 €, up to 150 locs. “Twisting and styling” maintenance: from 75 € (short hair, without shampoo), 85 € (medium-length), 95 € (long) and 105 € (very long). Latching maintenance: from 90 €, 100 €, 110 € and 120 €. For a child, a twist start begins at 70 €. Beyond 3 h for a start, or 2 h for a maintenance session, a surcharge of 20 € per hour applies. Extensions, sister locks and micro locks: by quote. All prices are on the booking page.

Maintaining your locs 12

Are frizz-free locs possible?
The little hairs that stick out are part of locs. They can be tucked back into the loc with a crochet hook, or trimmed with scissors.
Do locs form from the root?
No: locking begins a few centimetres from the root. At every shampoo, new growth that is not yet locked quickly shows.
Can I thicken my locs?
Once firmly set, they thicken with difficulty. Avoid twisting them after every shampoo, or twist without tightening. For already established locs, the solution is to double them.
If I take out my locs, will I keep my length?
You will keep part of your length, but not all of it.
Why are my locs getting thinner?
Several causes are possible: locs that tighten as they mature, maintenance sessions or hairstyles that are too tight, or long, heavy locs that pull on the root. A slight variation in thickness is normal. However, if you feel pain, if your hairline is receding, if areas are thinning or if locs come loose easily, talk to the salon and see a doctor or a trichologist: prolonged tension can damage the scalp. The salon can double or reattach locs, and offers a diagnosis with a trichoscope.
My locs are not uniform: is that normal?
Yes, that is normal. Every hair is different, and your locs do not all progress at the same rate: small differences in thickness, length or shape are common, even on the same head. If an area bothers you, show it to us during the appointment: a maintenance session or doubling locs can help even them out.
Why are my locs dull?
Often because of residue: greasy or waxy products, hard water limescale, dust and sebum form a film that stops light from reflecting. Avoid waxes, butters and heavy oils, rinse thoroughly and dry your locs completely. To remove this residue and bring back the shine of your locs, you can have a treatment, a seasonal treatment, a clarifying treatment or a detox.
My hair is dull, what can I do?
You can have a treatment, a seasonal treatment, a clarifying treatment or a detox.
Clarifying and deep cleansing: what are they for?
Clarifying (clarifying / detox treatment) removes what builds up in the locs: product residue, limescale, sebum, dust. It is not done at every wash, because too much cleansing dries the hair out: a deep treatment follows. The salon also offers a deep-cleansing course, to be booked by phone or in person. After every wash, dry your locs completely, including the core: locs that stay damp can smell bad.
What care do my locs need?
At home: wash your locs about every 1 to 2 weeks with a residue-free shampoo, rinse thoroughly, dry completely, lightly moisturise the scalp and protect them at night with a satin bonnet or scarf. Avoid waxy or heavy products. At the salon: shampoo (from 25 €), seasonal treatment (from 60 €), strengthening or exfoliating treatment (from 60 €), clarifying / detox treatment (from 80 €), trichology diagnosis with treatment (from 100 €), and courses at reduced prices.
How do I repair weakened locs?
The salon repairs a weakened, thinned or fallen loc, with or without adding a natural strand, and reattaches cut or fallen locs. We offer repair with a crochet hook and needle piquage. If a loc has fallen out, bring it to the appointment. If in doubt, contact us before booking. Repair starts at 6 € per loc, or 8 € with a natural strand; the price varies with the length to be repaired. Avoid over-tightening or retightening your locs yourself: it weakens them.
I want to repair my locs.
We offer repair with a crochet hook and needle piquage.

Colour 3

Can I colour or bleach my locs?
Yes, the salon offers colour, bleaching and repigmenting treatment on locs. If your colour looks dull, you can have a new colour or a repigmenting treatment. Contact us before booking: the result depends on your hair, and a colour without bleaching may come out darker than the shade chart. Lightening a lot can take several appointments, and we do not bleach very dry or fragile locs. Always do an allergy test before colouring, and do not colour if you have redness or itching.
My colour looks dull.
You can have a new colour or a repigmenting treatment.
Does colour damage locs?
It depends on the product. Bleaching is the harshest: it weakens the hair and makes it more brittle. Permanent colour generally damages more than semi-permanent or plant-based colour. Staying close to your natural colour damages less, and combining colour, bleaching and other chemical treatments damages more: leave time between them. Moisturise your locs afterwards and protect them from the sun.

Hairstyles 2

What hairstyles can be done on locs?
Half-up, two-strand twists and braids, bun, petals, curled-up or wavy locs, jewellery and beads, wedding or ceremony hairstyle: the salon offers all of this. A hairstyle alone starts at 20 € (half-up), 35 € (hairstyle alone) or 45 € (two-strand twists and braids), and jewellery and beads at 20 €. For an elaborate hairstyle (petals, curled-up or wavy locs), add the surcharge of 20 €. Avoid hairstyles that pull on the forehead and temples, and do not tighten the hair ties: if it hurts, it is too tight.
Can I cut my locs?
Yes. The salon can trim your locs (25 €) and do a graduated cut (10 €): straight bob, angled bob or a more rounded cut. Cutting a loc is permanent for the length removed; growth then resumes. To even out your locs without losing too much length, talk to us at the appointment.
